How to get Permanent Residency (PR) in Canada after your Studies?

As an international student who knows and loves Canada, you may decide that you want to extend your study permit. Or maybe you want to live and work here after you graduate.

Canada welcomes you. After all, Canada is a country that is built on immigration.

Pathways to Permanent Residence - PR - in Canada and Immigration

·         Extension of a Study Permit

·         Renewal of Temporary Resident Visa

·         Applying for Permanent Resident Status and Stay in Canada

Extend a Study Permit

Your study permit allows you to begin your studies in Canada. If you want to continue your education in Canada, you will need to extend your study permit.

·         You need a valid passport to obtain or extend a study permit. This means that the expiration date of your passport must be longer than the time of any extended study permit.

·         You must apply for an extension of your study permit at least 30 days before the current study permit expires.

The expiration date of your study permit is in the upper right corner of the permit. Find out how to extend your study permit and how much you will need to pay.

What if you want to live in Canada but are no longer studying? You have to:

·         Apply for a work permit if you want to live in Canada to work

·         Apply to change your status and then stay in Canada as a visitor

To stay in Canada after the completion of your studies, you will need a visitor visa if you do not have a work permit.

Renewal of a Temporary Resident Visa

The Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) is an official document issued by a Canadian Visa Office. It takes a page in your passport and shows that you have met the requirements for entry into Canada as a temporary resident.

As an international student, you will have a valid study permit. However, a temporary resident visa may allow your spouse/partner or children to live with you in Canada. Some wives and partners also have work visas.

If you decide to immigrate to Canada after your studies, your spouse, partner, or children may wish to live as well. If so, they have to renew their temporary resident visa.

Apply for Permanent Resident - PR – Status

As a student in Canada, you are not a permanent resident (PR) or a citizen of Canada. When you complete your studies, you will want to immigrate to Canada and then become a citizen.

To do this, you need to apply for permanent resident status. Here's how it works:

·         You can apply for permanent resident status

·         To remain a citizen of your country

·         You will become a Canadian citizen when and when your immigration process is complete

If you have completed your studies and are employed in Canada, you can apply to be considered within a group of candidates that the government will allow becoming permanent residents through the Express Entry Program.

The Rights of Permanent Residents

As a permanent resident, you would have the right to

·         Receive social benefits that Canadian citizens do, including free health care in the province or territory you live in.

·         Live, work or study anywhere in Canada.

·         Apply for Canadian citizenship.

·         Be protected by the laws of Canada; and, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

You must pay taxes and respect all Canadian laws at the federal, provincial, and city levels.

As a permanent resident - PR, you are not allowed to

·         Vote or run for political office

·         Hold jobs requiring high-level security clearance
